Head of Balance Sheet Optimisation

This is a senior leadership role for an experienced actuary or balance sheet specialist to build and embed a best-in-class balance sheet optimisation capability within a growing and increasingly complex reinsurance environment. The role will combine strong technical expertise with commercial judgement, helping to shape strategic decision-making across asset strategy, earnings, capital, liquidity and broader business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop a deep understanding of the balance sheet, ALM exposures and optimisation opportunities.
• Build and lead a robust balance sheet optimisation framework across asset strategy, capital, liquidity, earnings and commercial objectives.
• Establish and operate a first-line ALM risk framework, including monitoring and active management of risks.
• Design and enhance analytical capabilities to support balance sheet optimisation and decision-making.
• Translate high-level strategic objectives into clear, prioritised initiatives and delivery plans.
• Partner closely with stakeholders across investments, finance, actuarial and risk.
• Represent the function in governance forums and contribute to broader strategic discussions.
• Monitor regulatory, market and industry developments and assess their implications for the business.

Candidate Profile

• Qualified actuary with significant post-qualification experience, likely 10+ years.
• Strong experience across a number of the following areas:
  • ALM and investment risk
  • Balance sheet management
  • Capital, liquidity and collateral management
  • Cashflow modelling and optimisation
  • Regulatory and financial reporting
  • Reinsurance or complex insurance environments
• Strong commercial mindset with the credibility to influence senior stakeholders.
• Experience building or shaping analytics and modelling capabilities.
• Familiarity with tools such as Excel, Prophet, Python, R, SQL and Power BI would be beneficial.
• Collaborative and pragmatic approach, with strong judgement and the ability to work effectively in a complex, evolving environment.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to different audiences.
